Cross Compliance
Common causes of cross compliance failures: -
§ SOIL ASSESMENT BOOK –
Should be completed by the 31st of January every year and signed in the middle. Also needs to be updated throughout the year.
§ HERD REGISTER –
Should be kept up to date at all times. Movements & births need to be notified to BCMS within the time limits. Failure to TB testing prior to movement can also be a breach.
§ SHEEP RECORDS –
Should be kept up to date at all times, and annual inventory needs to be recorded in the book and returned to DEFRA by the 31st January. Movement licences also need to be returned to the local authority and kept in date order on farm. Sheep have been the area of most common breaches. Failure to tag lambs within 9 months or with the appropriate tag prior to movement has been an area where many have failed.
Double Tagging – All sheep born after 11th of January 2008, that are intended
for breeding will need to be double tagged. The tags must be identical and have the full official
UK number. Animals intended for slaughter under 12 months will only need a single UK tag,
which must be applied by 6 months of age for intensive systems and 9 months for extensive.
There will be no need to record individual numbers except when the animal is to be exported.
§ PESTICIDE & HERBICIDE TREATMENT RECORD – USEAGE RECORD –
This is the amount and description of product used and on what fields.
§ MEDICINES –
Should include purchase and administration dates, quantity used to what animals, where bought, withdrawal dates etc.
§ INPUTS/OUTPUTS RECORDS UNDER FOOD LAW –
Keep a record of all concentrates, minerals and feed blocks purchased with batch number, amount, description etc.
§ GROUNDWATER AUTHORISATION RECORD –
Having a licence is not enough. You must also put date, amount used, what was used and where it was disposed.
§ HEDGECUTTING
This has also been a problem. You must not cut your hedges between the 1st March and the 31st August, except for roadsides.
All the following authorities are working together and an inspection by any of these could result in penalties being applied. EA, LA, MHS, SVS, BCMS
